Gang Starr was an U.s. hip hop duo, composed of Guru (Backronym for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, real title Keith Elam) hailing from either Boston, Massachusetts and DJ Premier (real title Chris Martin) hailing from either Houston, Texas. It were depending around Brooklyn, New York and epitomize the New York City hip-hop sound. A integrality of Gang Starr's catalog, especially Step in the Arena (1991, 1991 in music) and Daily Operation (1992, 1992 in music), are easily-respected among critics & hip-hop heads similar (save, peradventure their virtually all recent effort, The Ownerz). Their track "Jazz Thang", featured on the soundtrack to Spike Lee's film "Mo Better Blues", helped establish the healthy of jazz rap.

A class action was founded within 1987 by having Guru, DJ 1,2 B Down & various producers, like Donald D (or even Dee), J.V. Johnson or even DJ Mark A 45 King. Inside 1987 & 1988 it freed 3 12" vinyl singles on the legendary Wild Pitch label, and in 1989 Guru and DJ Premier (then working under the name Waxmaster C) met for the first time. In the same year released the single "Words We Manifest" and went on working together as a group for six albums, a "right of" or "greatest hits" compilation and numerous singles.

On September 1st, 2005, Guru has revealed in an interview with the hiphop online-magazine sohh.com that the group doesn't exist anymore, but that it has ended instead of breaking up. This has finally cleared up the rumors that came up first on the european Gang Starr tour in 2003/2004 when DJ Premier suddenly went back to the US and Guru continued touring under the group's name with another DJ. It is a bit disappointing that they have never made a proper press release to the public, leaving the entire hiphop world in the dark for almost two years.
